Several members of north London’s BNI Hadleigh chapter attended BNI’s Members Day in June.  BNI member’s day is an annual event attended by over 700 BNI members from across the UK.  This year’s event was a phenomenal success and generated an estimated £ £5.9 million of potential business between members.

BNI founder,  Dr Ivan Misner delivered a fantastic talk to BNI members in which he shared the secrets of becoming a master networker.  He explained that these secrets were based on his own experiences of building BNI, the world’s largest and most successful networking organisation, over the past 25 years. 

It is clear to see why Dr Misner has been so phenomenally successful.  He exudes charisma, friendliness and warmth.  On stage he shared his life experiences and expertise in a relaxed and accessible style, whilst riveting the audience with amusing anecdotes and fascinating insights into how to make networking work for you.

Off stage Dr Misner is an accessible and thoughtful individual that made time for all those that wanted to talk to him.  He also patiently posed for photographs and signed his new book “Networking Like A Pro”.

Secrets of Networking

Dr Misner shared that  the most important factor to successful networking is having a positive attitude.  He explained that he has found it relatively easy to teach successful networking skills to someone with a positive attitude.  However,  conversely, he explains that he finds it more difficult to teach someone to be successful without a positive mind set.

In addition Dr Misner has developed  a formula that is key to successful networking.  The formula is V.C.P.  - which stands for:

1.      Visibility – you need to be seen in networking circles so that people know you are there!

2.      Credibility – you need to build a good reputation in networking circles to be seen as credible and worthy of passing referrals to  – what  matters is how others think about you and not what you think about you!

3.      Profitability – with visibility and credibility this can lead to a building of confidence about you among your contacts which can lead to profitability – in other words being  visible and credible can lead others to pass lucrative referrals to you.

The video was created as the chapter’s entry into the BNI’s UTweet competition and  was the brain child of group member Diana Chrouch of Chrouch Consulting, marketing and income generation consultant.  She wrote and produced the video with the support of fellow group members.  It was filmed and edited by visitor to the group, budding film maker Josh Wardle.

Lycra Catsuits!

Chapter members took part in the video with gusto, dressing up as aliens in rubber masks and lycra cat suits, whilst Jackie Taylor of Outstanding Lives alternative health practitioner,  donned an astronaut’s suit.  The waiter was played by web sited designer Clinton Gomer of Energy House Digital. Our assortment of scary aliens were played by BNI Hadleigh members:

• Marc Rose – IT support specialist of Marcrosoft  in the purple lycra!

Attracting New Members

Although the video shows an amusing spoof visit to the moon to have a BNI breakfast meeting with aliens, the real message is about the extra business that BNI can bring to its members through referrals.  Also very importantly, the video highlights the importance of bringing visitors to the chapter to help it to grow by attracting new members and business.

Hadleigh chapter has first hand experience of how increasing the membership brings in extra business. The figures speak for themselves. From January to June 2009  23 members earned £141k worth of business.  These figures leapt dramatically following an increase in membership to 32 so that  between June 2009 and January 2010 members earned £737 k!

"Great Example of Marketing a Business" - Review Devlopit Consultants

The BNI Hadleigh promotional video features a hilarious spoof breakfast meeting on the moon with aliens.  It was produced as part of the BNI UTweet competition but its primary objective is to promote BNI Hadleigh’s weekly networking meeting and promte the services of its professional and trade business people.

The video is a viral marketing promotion which was produced with a almost no budget but with the good will and support of BNI Hadleigh chapter members who contributed their time and resources for free to support the making of the film.  Viral marketing means that the marketing message spreads like a virus because each person that sees the video is encouraged to pass it on to.   In addition a proactive Twitter campaign has been added to ensure that viewers get in touch and so become contacts rather than anonymous viewers.  The benefit of extra contacts to a networking group who are looking to promote their member’s services and attract more businesses to network with are of course self-evident.
